Repower Initiative
Accelerating the transition from coal to clean energy by exploring how existing power plant sites can be transformed into low-carbon energy hubs—making use of existing infrastructure while considering the needs of plant owners, workers, and local communities.
the problem
Transitioning away from coal raises questions about the future of existing power plants, their infrastructure, and the communities around them. Repowering offers a way to assess how these sites could support clean energy generation instead, but identifying suitable pathways requires an understanding of their technical, economic, financial, social, and environmental implications.
the APPROACH
The Repower Initiative brings together academic partners, developers, researchers, and policymakers to investigate and advance clean repowering opportunities. Its approach combines a case-study framework with RepowerScore, a tool for assessing the suitability of individual plants for different technologies, including advanced nuclear, next-generation geothermal, and concentrated solar power. Partnerships and outreach help share findings and connect the organisations needed to move projects forward.
the oUTCOME
The initiative provides tools, research, and a collaborative network to support informed decisions about repowering coal power plants. Its work aims to accelerate the shift towards clean energy while making use of existing infrastructure and considering the implications for workers and local communities.
