Last week Quantified Carbon’s Alice, Daniel, Joseph, and Staffan attended the Repower Initiative‘s first Repower China Summit in Beijing, bringing together leading academics, financial institutions, energy operators, and NGOs to discuss all things repowering.
The summit included three panel sessions spanning decarbonisation policy, the coal-to-nuclear pathway in China, and the commercialisation of repowering projects.
QC ran two workshops at the summit:
𝟏. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 explored how repowering can be incorporated into IAMs and capacity expansion and dispatch modelling, with researchers from KAIST and Tsinghua University. Discussions focused on what indicators and scenarios best capture the value of repowering, and how to improve the assumptions underpinning these models.
𝟐. 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐥-𝐭𝐨-𝐍𝐮𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐒𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 brought together research groups including DEsire – Platforma Transformacji Energetyki and Xiamen University to discuss developing methodologies and their integration into RepowerScore (https://repowerscore.org/). The session included a live demo of the latest release.
